DePauw University
College review by Lisa Bleich
DePauw’s campus is set amidst a picturesque backdrop of uniform brick buildings surrounded by plenty of green open space and quaint walkways. DePauw is a small liberal arts college that also has a top-notch school of music.
As we walked around campus, we were amazed by the pristine look and beauty of the campus. The students wore shorts, jeans, button down shirts, t-shirts, cute dresses, athletic wear, Birkenstocks, and Sperry topsiders. There was a preppy, clean-cut feel on campus. Counter to the look of the students, we noticed some placards in the lawn advertising tampon alternatives to protect the environment.
We also were treated to a rehearsal of students from the school of music as they prepared for a future performance. Here is a link to the wonderful student musicians.
Our tour guide was friendly and low-key. He is a swimmer and involved in the Business Fellows program and a member of a fraternity. Students were described as smart, hard-working and not strongly intellectual; 11% of the students are international, 20% are students of color and 21% are first generation college students.
Athletics and Greek life play a large role in the social life on campus with 30-40% of the students participating in athletics and 66% participating in Greek life. Overall students are happy with a 92% retention rate. Students are also involved in community service and many take advantage of the three-week January term to participate in service trips.
A new initiative on campus is the Hubbard Center for student engagement that was started in 2012. Students are paired with a life coach, learn how to take ownership of their digital presence as well as identify career goals. DePauw also provides money for students to participate in unpaid internships. So far this initiative is leading to promising results in students finding jobs upon graduation.
Admissions
The average DePauw admitted student has an ACT score ranging between 25-30 and an SAT score of 1660-1990. The average GPA is roughly 3.47. The average TOEFL score for international students is a minimum of 85. Music majors must be admitted to both the college and the school of music. Approximately 75% of students receive some merit aid ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 per year and 60% receive need based aid.
Summary
DePauw is a good school for a preppy, type B student who wants to be in a small liberal arts environment with a dominant Greek life and a beautiful, rural campus.
