Sierra Nevada College
College review by Lisa Bleich
In one of the most beautiful locations in the world set among glorious mountains and a glistening lake, sits Sierra Nevada College, a small liberal arts college. It is best known for its ski resort management major. Given its location in Incline Village on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, with 11 ski resorts within an hour’s drive, it is no wonder that students interested in pursuing that major are attracted to the school.
SNC also has a strong environmental science and sustainability program. It shares an environmental center and lab with UC Davis graduate school, however they only share the space. Students do not cross register for classes. This center’s research focuses on water conservation as well as water related research associated with Lake Tahoe.
With roughly 500 undergraduate students, the professor/student interaction is very strong. We spoke with a recent graduate of SNC and she said that she transferred here from the University of Nevada, Reno because she enjoyed the more focused attention of the faculty members.
They helped her attain internships and really cared about her learning and progress. The campus itself feels like a ski lodge, large lofted buildings filled with wooden beams and lots of glass to let in natural light. The campus is minutes from Lake Tahoe and the beach.
Sierra Nevada is a good fit for students interested in business, environmental science, or ski resort management and want an intimate, personalized college experience.
