I am a Portland, Oregon-based fiction writer, educator and mother of three young adults. Over the years, I’ve taught writing, worked at arts nonprofits, and had my short stories published. Now, I have one teenager at home, one daughter in law school at University of Virginia and the other in college at New York University. Having navigated their college application processes, I’ve witnessed the need for clear guidance and support through an exciting and challenging time in the lives of both the students and parents. My own college experience at Duke University (AB in Public Policy Studies) was transformational. Later, I received an MFA in Fiction from Antioch Los Angeles.
A through-line in my board and professional experience is how I value empowering distinctive voices and creative expression. As an advocate for other writers and artists, I have worked or volunteered at several organizations with programs that range from artist residencies and art education to arts integration in the classroom to writers embedded in public high schools. Currently, I serve on the board of Literary Arts and the National Council of Graywolf Press.
Over the years, I have taught writing in literacy programs, community colleges and K-12 schools. Often, writers need structured guidance, encouragement, or a source of accountability. I particularly enjoy working with teens. I place an emphasis on meeting each student where they are in their writing process, respecting their creative voice, and putting the stepping stones in place for them to move forward in a positive and productive way. What is your next step? Whether you love writing or find it challenging, we will uncover the story that only you can tell.
