Seattle University

Seattle University is a Jesuit Catholic university located in the heart of Seattle. Eight colleges and schools offer more than 120 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs to SeattleU’s 5000 undergraduate and 2000 graduate students.

Academics

Seattle University is dedicated to educating the whole person. There is a continued mission to develop the mind, body, and spirit, and all students follow a core curriculum that is anchored in Jesuit educational traditions.

SeattleU offers three ten-week quarters. The average class is made up of 18 students, and all classes are taught by faculty. The faculty to student ratio is 1 to 11. Undergraduates can enter the schools of Business, Arts and Sciences, Education, Nursing, or Science and Engineering. Students may apply to the honors program which offers a sequence of rigorous seminars designed to augment academic majors and pursuits.

Popular programs include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Applicants should keep in mind that even within the technical majors, writing, theology, and philosophy are requirements.

Nursing students are admitted directly into the program, and admissions looks closely at the math and science background of all applicants. Clinical work is performed at Seattle’s Children’s or Swedish hospitals and nursing students have access to a hands-on learning lab. There is also the opportunity to receive a diagnostic ultrasound certificate.

Social Life

Campus ministry is big on campus. Social engagement is encouraged, and SeattleU closes for a day each year so students can give back. There are numerous service-oriented clubs and cultural clubs, and the students we met take advantage of Seattle. Attending school sporting events as groups is common, but the campus has a laid-back atmosphere when it comes to school spirit. Students looking to party often go to the University of Washington for the Greek party scene found there. Students must live on campus for the first two years.

Seattle University plays Division 1 sports, with soccer being the biggest draw.

Both men’s and women’s teams won the 2019 Western Championship.

45% of students are from Washington, and 11% are international. Students from Hawaii and California make up a large percentage of the out-of-state students. 99% of students attend full-time, and 96% live on campus.

Surrounding Area

SeattleU is located in a hip, bustling part of town with many shops, restaurants, and bars. The school is close to both the water and Chinatown. There is a nice park down the street from campus.

Career Support

Seattle offers many opportunities for internships, including Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft, Nordstrom, and Tableau. Numerous hospitals provide internship and clinical opportunities for SeattleU students.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Applications are looked at holistically, and SeattleU superscores all tests.

Prerequisites for engineering and nursing programs should be carefully reviewed.

Recent Freshman class profile includes the following scores:

  • GPA 3.4-3.9
  • SAT 1150-1340
  • ACT 24-30
  • 97% of students receive financial aid and the average package is $32,000.
  • Merit scholarships range from $8,000 to $25,000.
