COLLEEN M. WEISS

My story has always come back to one truth: I love to learn.
I grew up in Westfield, NJ and graduated from Westfield High School in 1998. As an English major at the College of the Holy Cross, I loved the critical thinking aspect to my courses and the dialogue that permeated every wall of every classroom. I gained eye-opening life experience as an intern in the office of Senator Robert Torricelli where I witnessed how writing impacted the lives of constituents in daily life. As an intern at Condé Nast, I learned how Traveler magazine editors used unique rhetoric to impact their audience.

After earning my teaching certification and Master’s in English Education at the University at Buffalo, I shared my love of writing and analyzing texts with students in ninth through twelfth grade in a variety of courses, including AP Language and Composition. Often some of my senior students would meet with me after school to discuss their college essays. I loved learning more about them from their personal stories and looked forward to helping them find crafty ways to reach the admissions officers. Some of my favorite challenges as a teacher involved finding ways to make writing exciting. I carry that passion with me today.

I began working with College Bound Mentor as an essay specialist in 2015. Working with our clients has given me a chance to teach, to listen, and to learn about the stories that each and every student who walks into a classroom carries with them each and every day. I pride myself on being an approachable support to my clients. As a teacher and a mother, I understand how important it is to feel comfortable with those who are willing to help us navigate life’s difficult decisions.
